Mechanical machine assembly drawing from APJ's portfolio

A good mechanical design project starts with a shared understanding of the requirement. Before discussing a CAD model, describe the problem the design needs to solve and how the finished equipment or component will be used.

Start with the application

Explain the process, the workpiece and the intended user. For machinery, describe the sequence of operations, the available space and how material enters and leaves the system. A simple process sketch can be more useful than an early detailed model.

Gather the reference information

  • Existing drawings, photographs and available samples
  • Overall dimensions and installation constraints
  • Material and component information, where known
  • Operating conditions and expected duty
  • Interfaces with other machines or assemblies

Identify which dimensions are confirmed and which need to be checked. An assumption should be visible in the brief so it can be reviewed before detailed design begins.

Define the deliverables

Specify whether you need concept layouts, 3D component models, an assembly, production drawings or support with a design review. Discuss the required file formats and drawing conventions with the people who will manufacture or use the output.

A concept model and a manufacturing drawing serve different purposes. Agreeing on the intended output helps keep the design scope clear.

Plan the review points

Decide who will approve the concept and who will check manufacturing, assembly and maintenance considerations. Reviewing a layout before detailing every component can make later discussions more productive.

Discuss the next step

APJ Engineering Design Works in Coimbatore provides machine design and product design services. Share the available references and the application with our team to discuss an appropriate design scope.
